CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) - HAZMAT (H) Endorsement
A comprehensive training program designed to prepare commercial drivers to safely handle and transport hazardous materials in compliance with FMCSA and DOT regulations.
Course Overview
The CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) - HAZMAT (H) Endorsement course aligns with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations — CFR Title 49 Parts 171–180. This course provides the essential knowledge and safety practices needed for drivers to transport hazardous materials safely and efficiently while complying with federal standards.
Who Should Enroll?
- Commercial driver trainees applying for a Hazardous Materials (H) Endorsement on their CDL for the first time
- Drivers handling or transporting regulated hazardous materials
- Transportation professionals seeking FMCSA-compliant ELDT certification
What You'll Learn
The complete CDL ELDT - HAZMAT (H) Endorsement course includes comprehensive modules covering:
- General awareness training on hazardous materials regulations and classifications
- Detailed instruction on classification, packaging, marking, labeling, placarding, and packing
- Highway-specific requirements for transporting hazardous materials
- Function-specific training, including the responsibilities and duties of the driver
- Emergency preparedness and response procedures for hazmat incidents
Regulatory Requirement
As of February 2022, the FMCSA mandates that all entry-level drivers must complete approved training before taking the knowledge test to obtain the H Endorsement on their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This course fulfills that requirement and prepares drivers for certification and safe hazmat transport.
Renewal and Validity
The ELDT HAZMAT (H) Endorsement training does not expire, and recurrent training is not required. However, when a CDL expires—typically every five years on the driver’s birthday—the H Endorsement renewal requires a TSA security threat assessment. Some states may impose more frequent assessments based on local licensing regulations.
Note:There is no separate training required for the X endorsement. Drivers obtain it by completing the H (HazMat) endorsement training and passing the DMV knowledge test for the N (Tanker) endorsement, which together authorize the transport of hazardous materials in tank vehicles.
