Confined Space Supervisor Training
Our Confined Space Supervisor Training course is designed to support supervisors working in construction and
industrial environments where confined space work takes place. Confined spaces pose significant life-threatening
hazards, including oxygen-deficient atmospheres, toxic gases, engulfment risks, and other dangerous conditions.
Without proper supervision, planning, and adherence to OSHA regulations, workers are at high risk during confined
space operations.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), between 2011 and 2018,
1,030 American workers lost their lives due to confined space incidents. OSHA case reports also highlight frequent
accidents caused by poor planning, inadequate atmospheric testing, lack of communication, and incorrect rescue
procedures.
To help reduce these risks, this course is structured to equip supervisors with the knowledge and skills necessary
to meet OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910.146 and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA.
It emphasizes practical decision-making, hazard control, permit authorization, and emergency coordination so
supervisors can confidently manage confined space entries.
Why Choose Our Confined Space Course for Supervisors?
- Focused on practical, role-specific responsibilities for Entry Supervisors.
- Taught by subject matter experts with real-world confined space experience.
- Provides up-to-date training on hazard controls, entry permitting, and emergency response coordination.
- Builds strong decision-making skills required for safe confined space oversight.
What You'll Learn
- How to recognize confined spaces, evaluate hazards, and authorize safe entry.
- How to oversee confined space operations, including testing, monitoring, and communication procedures.
- Regulatory requirements for confined spaces under both General Industry and Construction OSHA standards.
- How to safeguard workers by implementing proper controls, PPE, and rescue coordination.
- How to review and verify permits, enforce safe practices, and manage entry teams effectively.
Who Should Enroll?
-
Individuals designated as Entry Supervisors on any job site where confined space entry occurs.
-
Personnel responsible for verifying permits, authorizing entries, and ensuring compliance with confined space procedures.
-
Safety Officers, Site Managers, Project Managers, and anyone overseeing confined space workers.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define confined spaces and distinguish between permit-required and non-permit confined spaces.
- Recognize key characteristics that make an area a confined space (limited entry/exit, not designed for continuous occupancy).
- Understand applicable OSHA regulations for confined spaces in both the construction industry and general industry.
- Identify atmospheric hazards such as toxic gases, flammable vapors, and abnormal oxygen levels (low or high).
- Recognize physical hazards (engulfment, mechanical, electrical, temperature) and apply effective control measures.
- Understand supervisor responsibilities for planning, authorizing, and overseeing confined space entries.
- Recognize roles and duties of entrants, attendants, and employers in confined space operations.
- Oversee atmospheric testing procedures and interpret monitoring results to ensure safe entry conditions.
- Verify selection and use of PPE, including appropriate respiratory protection and its fit-testing/inspection requirements.
- Ensure correct use of safety and rescue equipment such as retrieval systems, winches, tripods, and retrieval harnesses.
- Explain safe hot work practices and required controls when hot work is performed inside or near confined spaces.
- Prepare for and supervise confined space rescue operations in accordance with OSHA standards and site-specific procedures.
